5 Handy Apps to Get You Marathon Ready

9:59 AM

Get to the finish line with ease!

With spring just around the corner, we’re getting stoked for marathon season. If you’ve been hibernating the past few months, we’ve found five apps that will coach you, whip you into shape, and get you eating healthy. And if it’s your first time putting on your running shoes, no worries — there’s an app for that, too. Check out our faves!

1. Couch-to-5K ($1.99): Not a pro at running? No problem. This program was designed to get you off the couch and running in no time. It combines a mixture of walking and running short distances, and will have you running a 5k non-stop in just nine weeks.

2. MyFitnessPal (free): While training is key, it’s also important to make sure you’re keeping track of what you eat. This awesome app tracks calories and fitness, so it will have you in shape and feeling great for race day.

3. Fleetly (free): If competition is what drives you, this app is for you. You’ll earn points for each complete training session and have the ability to compete with other athletes too.

4. RunKeeper (free): Keeping a steady pace is super important for any marathon runner. This app can help with a bunch of aspects of your run, including tracking your pace and heart rate. Plus, it can synch information to your computer so you can map routes out and more.

5. Personal Running Trainer (free): Whether you’re a beginner runner or a seasoned marathon pro, this app is like having your very own personal trainer. Once you choose your distance, it will automatically schedule your workouts and your coach will let you know when to speed up, when to slow down, and when to rest.

Happy running!

Saddlebag Slimmers

4 simple moves to get your hips in tip-top shape

We all wish we could have the perfect backside: round, perky, fabulously toned. But in our undying quest to one day look like Beyonce (we can dream, can’t we?), there seems to be one tiny problem holding us back — OK, so maybe it’s more like two not-so-tiny problems: it’s our saddlebags.

No, we’re not talking about those things you use to carry your stuff when you take your horse out on a ride through the Malibu hills. We mean those unsightly fat deposits that hang on the sides of your hips and turn your would-be hourglass shape into something more like a sharp triangle. They can be caused by a number of factors, including a diet heavy in refined carbs, but a lot of the time they show up because your booty’s missing muscle. When it actually sits on your thighs, fat can get pushed out onto and up your hips.

Lucky for you, there are some easy exercises you can do on a daily basis to get the most out of your natural curves. Including these four moves into your regular cardio routine will get your butt in Beyonce shape in no time!

Side Saddle Leg Lifts
You know it’s good for saddlebags when the word “saddle” is actually in the name of the exercise! This move is great for toning the derriere, as well as both the inner and outer thigh because it works everything. Trust us, you’ll be feeling the burn!

Start on your side, legs extended. Keep your top hand on the ground in front of your stomach throughout the exercise, while your bottom arm supports your head. With your bottom leg straight on the ground, lift your top leg six to eight inches off the floor. Pulse your leg 20 times. Next, keeping your top leg raised, move your heel in small circles for 20 reps. Finally, bend and straighten your raised knee 20 times, making sure to keep it raised in its highest position. Repeat on the second side.

Forward and Back Lunges
The trick to these babies is to go as fast as you can without sacrificing good form. After a couple of rounds, your thighs might feel like Jello, but after a few weeks, they definitely won’t look like it!

Start standing, legs together. Hold your arms bent in front of you with your hands clasped, for balance. Starting with the right side, lunge forward, making sure your knee stays over your ankle. In a single movement, stand up and move your right leg behind you into a deep back lunge. Repeat 20 times on each side.

Squat Press to Jump
While this move is fab for those saddlebag areas, it’s also an uh-mazing way to get your blood pumping!
Start standing, legs as wide apart as is comfortable. Keeping your back straight and your butt tucked underneath you (don’t bend forward!), squat down until your fingers touch the ground. Jump up to stand, reaching your arms above your head for height. Repeat 20 times (and don’t forget to land softly!).

Lunge Leg Lift
So this move will probably be as much of a challenge to your balance as it is to your backside, but it’s totally worth the effort! And if you’re feeling a little wobbly, you can always modify the pose so your hands are against a wall.

Start standing, feet shoulder-width apart. Take your right leg behind you into a lunge while you raise your arms in front of you to shoulder height. Stand up straight, bringing your right knee up to hip height in front of you. Then, extend your right leg behind you and hinge forward, keeping your hands on your hips (or at the wall in front of you) — your body should look like a capital T, with your back and extended right leg forming the top portion of the letter. Return to the previous knee lifted position before stepping back into lunge position. Repeat 20 times on each side.

Get your body into super shape with 6 fab moves

Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Black Widow. Three super ladies with some super serious bods. These girls are more than just pretty faces, though — they can take on any bad guy that crosses their path.

Being a superhero isn’t an easy job. You need to be ready to fly (sometimes quite literally) into action at the drop of a hat. Then, of course, there’s the weapons mastery, the fighting, the spandex.

But just because we can’t all actually become a member of The Avengers doesn’t mean we can’t at least look like one. We’ve rounded up some super moves that are sure to get you into super shape! After all, Comic Con is just around the corner, and if that’s not an excuse to dress up like our fave superheroine, we don’t know what is.

Superman/Banana
Anyone who’s tried the popular at-home workout system P90X should be familiar with this pose (and Tony Horton’s sometimes crazy back and forth speed). Start on your stomach with your arms and legs stretched out and shoulder width apart, six inches off the floor (like Superman). Hold for five seconds, then roll over onto your back, keeping your arms and legs lifted. Hold for another five seconds, then roll back onto your stomach and repeat for a minute. It works your back, abs, and butt, so you can bet you’ll have a body like Wonder Woman in no time!

Jumping Kick
Get into butt-kicking shape with this easy move! Stand with your feet hips width apart and your fists in front of your chest (remember, even superheroes need to block!). Jump a few feet to your right and land knees bent, with your left leg crossed behind your right. Return to standing, and kick your left leg in front of you, then tap your left foot. Repeat the move on your left side (landing with your right leg crossed behind your left) before kicking your right foot in front. Continue going back and forth for 20 reps, and before you know it, you’ll be ready to take on any villain!

Spider-Man Pullups
Want to know how Spidey stays in such super shape? All you need is a pullup bar and your own body weight! Position your hands slightly wider than shoulder width apart. Starting with the right side, pull yourself up toward your right hand while simultaneously lifting your right leg. Lower down and repeat the movement on the left side. Continue on each side for 10 reps. Your arms, back, abs, and legs will all feel the burn, but your teeny bikini will be thanking you come summer!

Up, Up, and Away
Looking for super sexy, superhero arms? Grab two 5-pound dumbbells (no, not your old boyfriends), and get into pushup position. Starting on the right side, pull your right arm up to your ribs, dumbbell in hand, in a rowing motion. Rotate your body so that your right side opens to face the wall and your hips are stacked. Extend your right arm up so that your palm faces forward. Lower into pushup position and repeat the move on your left side. Continue going back and forth for five complete reps.

Thor’s Hammer
Speaking of a super sexy superhero, this move will make you look downright god(dess)-like! Grab a 5-pound dumbbell with both hands, and stand with your feet wider than hips width apart. Starting on the right side, drop into a deep sideways lunge, then straighten and twist your body to the left, lifting the dumbbell up over your head. Repeat the move for 30 seconds on the right side before switching to the left. The workout should last a minute, but if you’re feeling extra super, go ahead and repeat for another set!

Hulk Squats
You can’t expect to kick some super villain butt without some super strong legs! Start by standing with your feet hips width apart (or a little farther, depending on what’s comfortable), and your weight on your heels. Bend your knees into a squat, leaning forward slightly so that your knees stay over your ankles. Touch your fingers to the ground, then explode into a jump, reaching for the ceiling. When you land, lower your body back into squat position. Repeat for one minute.

Minute to Thin It

Quick hits when you have no time for a workout

by the Workout Girl

It’s hard enough to squeeze in a good night’s rest, a long day of work, a doctor’s appointment, time to cook dinner, time to do all the housework, and just generally be a mom … You can’t always have time to squeeze in an hour-long workout. We totally get it. For those days when you’re feeling swamped, try one (or all) of these moves to quickly tone up for maximum results when you’re on the go. (Bonus: None of these moves requires any equipment, so you can do them anytime, anywhere.)

Speedy Toning Move #1: The Forearm Plank
Get in a position as if you’re going to do a push up. Then, bend your elbows so that you are resting on your forearms. Hold this position for 60 seconds. This move will help you tone your core when you only have a moment or two to spare.

Speedy Toning Move #2: The Wall Sit
Stand with your back against a wall. Slide your back down the wall until your knees are bent at a 90-degree angle. It should look like you are sitting on an invisible chair. Hold this position for 60 seconds. The wall sit is a great way to tone your legs and glutes when you’re in a time crunch.

Speedy Toning Move #3: The Pushup
Yep, this is your basic pushup. You know what to do. Make sure to keep your butt down, and keep your wrists directly underneath your shoulders. Do 10 good ones for a quick way to tone your arms when you’re pressed for time.

Now that you’ve mastered the shortcuts, are you ready for the real thing? Find complete workouts you can do anywhere at theworkoutgirl.com.

Tips to amp up your routine this spring #friends

Remember those fitness resolutions you made at the beginning of the year? Those plans to hit the gym every day? Train for a marathon? Lose 20 pounds?

By now, you’ve probably noticed that sticking to lofty exercise goals all year can be tough, especially as the days roll by and life gets in the way. By spring, we’re struggling to keep our workouts fresh and fun.
So this year, we asked workout guru and celeb trainer extraordinaire Kathy Kaehler to give us some tips on amping up our workout routine in order to help us get back on track. Here’s what she said about staying motivated and fit all year long.

1. Make sure to set out your gym bag the night before.
Seeing it laying out in front of you when you wake up can be a great motivator to get out of bed. No need to rummage through your drawers if your gear is all ready to go!
So what exactly to pack? A reusable water bottle, a change of clothes, some headphones, and a sweat towel. Plus, my secret fresh weapon: Always Sheer Liners. Wearing a pair while you work out will keep you feeling like you just stepped out of the shower, even after an intense day at the gym. They come in convenient purse packs, which makes it easy to throw them into your gym bag as part of your daily routine. Knowing you’ll still feel fresh at the end of your sweat sesh can be a great motivator to get you working hard.

2. Get out of your comfort zone.
Instead of continuing your old winter workout, let the new season inspire you to try something different. Test out an anti-gravity class or a boxing lesson. Get a trainer, jump in to an aquatics group, or take a spin on a bike. Learning new moves will challenge your heart rate and your muscles, getting you into better shape faster.

3. Get a new fit wardrobe.
One of my fave ways to kick up my workout is with new fitness gear. There’s just something about feeling cute at the gym that can lead to an extra energy boost. It’s another one of the reasons I love Always Sheer Liners. The thin, flexible, and discreet design can be worn with practically anything. That means you can totally rock them under your super cute new yoga pants and still feel confident. Down-there freshness during your downward facing dog is important to all of us – 19% of women think that wearing a Liner makes the most sense for a fitness routine, and we totally agree[1]!

4. Try a one-minute home workout.
With spring on the way, it is time to dust off your home gym workout gear for a little backyard training. Creating a circuit that uses what you already own can wake up the muscles, incinerate calories, and get you to break a sweat without requiring a trip to the gym.

Grab your jump rope, dumbbells, resistance band, exercise ball, and a mat. Then, make a list of moves to do for one minute each. (Check out an example of a workout I have done with some of my celebrity clients below!)

It’s as easy as that! Incorporate Kathy’s tips into your workout routine and you’ll feel strong, fit, and fresh all season. If that doesn’t put a little spring into your step, nothing will!

7 Exercises That Will Transform Your Body

9:41 PM

Looking for some effective ways to transform your body? There are a few great exercises that will help you to reach your fitness goal. These exercises are easy but effective in strengthening your body along with burning unwanted calories. However, sticking to these exercises is not enough to transform your body, you should also eat healthy and get enough sleep regularly. Don’t waste your precious time doing other workouts, here are seven exercises that will help you transform your body in no time.

1. Jumping rope

A cheap and easily portable exercise that you can do anywhere is jumping rope. This workout burns more calories per minute than any other workout. Get jumping for a perfect exercise and plenty of fun. One of the best things about jumping rope is that you can do it with your kids.

2. Squats

This powerful exercise helps tone your glutes, strengthen your body and burn a lot of calories. To boost your calorie expenditure and raise your heart rate, you can try to do jump squats. Or stay in a squat hold with dumbbells in the hands to increase the resistance as well as feel the burn. Doing squats regularly is one of the best ways to transform your body.

3. Pushups

Unfortunately, many people avoid doing pushups since this exercise is a bit harder to perform, but it can do wonders for your body. There are plenty of different pushups that work the different muscles in the shoulders and arms. Try to vary your pushup style to lower your risk of becoming bored with exercise. Not only do pushups work the upper body, but also work the core. Do pushups a few days a week to help sculpt the arms and overall transform the body.

4. Lunges

To tone the muscles in your legs try doing lunges. Lunges give you such amazing results because they isolate every leg individually, helping transform your body. To add some cardio and boost the intensity, do some jump lunges. I suggest you to do 3 sets of 10 lunges a day for the best results.

5. Swimming

The great news for all lovers of swimming and for those who are trying to transform their bodies – swimming is a super effective workout that will bring you astonishing results. Swimming helps strengthen your core and work different muscle groups.

6. Running

There are many benefits of running. It helps to relieve stress, reduce the risk of depression, burn mega calories and improve your overall health. I enjoy running, especially early in the morning, and I think it’s one of the best exercises to do every day. I always feel a great sense of accomplishment after my run.

7. Cycling

A cycling workout is a foolproof way to get a great sweat and work your legs. Cycling is a wonderful exercise since you can push yourself at a higher intensity. Bring along your significant other or friend, or cycle solo, and ensure you get the most out of your workout.

So there you have it! The list of the most effective exercises that will definitely help you transform your body. Just make sure you do them on a regular basis to see the best results. What’s your favorite exercise?

Lose fat in seven steps

Buy a skipping rope

Skipping is a high-intensity exercise that you can do anytime, anywhere. You only need a few minutes to give your metabolic rate a serious jump start that will help you burn more calories for hours afterwards.

Replace all drinks with water

This includes alcohol! Hydration is an important factor in optimal health and weight loss. Liquid calories are also the easiest to over-consume as they don't fill you up. Water has zero calories and no additives.

Two minute workouts

When you wake up, and when you get home from work, do one to two minutes of plyometric exercises such as star jumps or burpees. Like skipping, they max out your heart rate and boost your metabolism in minimal time.

Cut the calories

Reduce calorie-dense complex carbs and protein by replacing half your meal with more salad and vegetables. They are naturally low in calories and high in fibre, so you will seriously reduce the total number of calories you are consuming.

Count your steps

Get yourself a pedometer and make sure you take at least 10,000 steps a day. You have to be active every day as well as exercising - not one or the other, both! Get up more often in the office and go for a walk during breaks.

Non stop for fat loss

Turn your weights session into a fat-loss super-circuit. Don't rest between sets. Do your exercises back to back with no rest, too, then jump on a bike for a two-minute cardio burn. Rest briefly, then repeat your circuit three times.

Stretch out your workout

It's the end of the week so get out for a slower but longer workout, such as a long power walk, gentle swim or bike ride. While intense exercise is great for incinerating fat, long slow workouts also have their place.
