Apple-Nike partnership coming?

Apple CEO Tim Cook is known to wear a Nike FuelBand to monitor his fitness. Could an Apple watch be replacing it soon?

It’s a simple thing, really, the rubber and stainless steel band that a well-known CEO frequently wears around his wrist.

But the Nike FuelBand that Apple’s Tim Cook has been seen sporting at multiple public events is just one clue about a possible deal between Apple and Nike that could be part of the sales pitch when a rumored Apple watch hits the market.

Late on Friday (the traditional time of the week for companies to release bad news), came a news report that Nike had laid off much of the team responsible for the FuelBand and would not continue to update the line of wearable gadgets, which measure physical activity and monitor things like heart rate and calories burned.

Nike had planned to release a new, thinner FuelBand in the fall, but those plans have reportedly been shelved and the company won’t say whether there will be a new one.

Nike has said it plans to continue supporting the current FuelBand for the “forseeable future” and that new color options will be available.

Neither Nike nor Apple replied to messages seeking comment for this article.

Nike told tech blog Re/code that only a “small number” of staffers were laid off and said it remains committed to the Fuel line of fitness products.

Still, the retreat seems odd for a company that has made its name in sports equipment — and has led to speculations that Nike may be working on a new partnership with Apple.

“Apple is in the hardware business. Nike is in the sneaker business. I don’t think Apple sees Nike as competitive,” Jim Duffy, a Nike analyst with Stifel, Nicolaus & Company, told CNET. “Nike would be content to let Apple sell devices, as long as they would be supportive of the apps.”

Even Nike’s statement seems to leave the door open that an Apple deal might be the end goal.

“Nike is committed to Nike+, to NikeFuel, and to driving innovations that bring richer experiences for all athletes,” KeJuan Williams, a spokesperson for the company, said in a written statement.

“We will continue to leverage partnerships to expand our ecosystem of digital products and services, using
 NikeFuel as the universal currency for measuring, motivating and improving.”
Yes. “Leverage partnerships.”

Of course, a forthcoming Apple-Nike wearable product is still just conjecture at this point. But consider:

– Already, Apple’s iOS system is the only mobile system that can be used with the Fuel Band and its set of apps.

– Cook has sat on Nike’s board of directors for the past nine years. And the two companies have already teamed up to create the Nike+ mobile app for iPhones and iPods.

– In September, Apple hired Nike’s Ben Shaffer, the man behind the “Innovation Kitchen” that created Fuel Band.

– Apple is the highest-profile company that has not yet entered the wearable tech field — despite the fact that rumors of an “iWatch” have been swirling for years.

With Google, Samsung and other competitors already selling wearable gear, it would make sense for Apple to get into the game sooner rather than later.

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference is set to begin on June 2, and the company has used the event in the past to announce new products.

Alternately, Apple has made a habit of introducing a new iPhone every fall, in advance of the holiday shopping season. It would certainly make sense to unveil a new product then as well.

Apple is offering free recycling of all its used products and vowing to power all of its stores, offices and data centers with renewable energy to reduce the pollution caused by its devices and online services.

The iPhone and iPad maker is detailing its efforts to cultivate a greener Apple Inc. in an environmental section on the company’s website that debuted Monday.

The site highlights the ways that the Cupertino, Calif., company is increasing its reliance on alternative power sources and sending less electronic junk to landfills.

Apple had already been distributing gift cards at some of its 420 worldwide stores in exchange for iPhones and iPods still in good enough condition to be resold.

Now, all of the company’s stores will recycle any Apple product at no charge. Gift cards won’t be handed out for recycled products deemed to have little or no resale value.

The offer covers a wide array of electronics that aren’t supposed to be dumped in landfills because of the toxins in them. In the past seven years alone, Apple has sold more than 1 billion iPhones, iPods, iPads and Mac computers.

The new initiative, timed to coincide with Tuesday’s annual celebration of Earth Day, strives to position Apple as an environmental steward amid the technological whirlwind of gadgets and Internet services that have been drawing more electricity from power plants that primarily run on natural gas and coal.

Technology products and services accounted for about 2 percent of worldwide emissions in 2012, roughly the same as the airline industry, according to statistics cited by environmental protection group Greenpeace in a report released earlier this month.

Some of biggest electricity demands come from huge data centers that house the stacks of computers that process search requests, store photos and email and stream video.

These online services, often dubbed “cloud computing,” collectively consume more electricity than all but five countries — China, the U.S., Japan, India and Russia.

As the world’s largest technology company, Apple is trying to hatch more environmental solutions than problems.

“What the company wants to do is use all our innovation and all of our expertise to make the planet more secure and make the environment better,” Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environmental initiatives, said in a Monday interview. Jackson ran the Environmental Protection Agency under President Obama before joining Apple last June.

Apple CEO Tim Cook underscored the commitment by narrating a 1 minute, 44 second video about the company’s efforts to protect the environment. “To us, better is a force of nature,” Cook says in the video.

The campaign appears to be more than just public relations stunt, based on Greenpeace’s high praise for Apple in its recent review of the technology industry’s environmental responsibility.

Among the 19 companies covered in the report, Greenpeace described Apple as “the most innovative and most aggressive in pursuing its commitment to be 100 percent renewably powered.”

Greenpeace also gave high marks to Apple rival, Google Inc., and Facebook Inc., which makes one of the most popular apps on the iPhone and iPad.

All four of Apple’s data centers, which are located in North Carolina, Oregon, Nevada and California, already rely entirely on renewable energy, the company said. The electricity comes from a variety of alternative sources, including biogas, as well as wind, solar and hydro power.

That means whenever people are interacting with Apple’s iTunes store, sending messages or engaging in video chats, they “can feel comfortable that they are not adding any carbon pollution to the atmosphere,” Jackson said.

About 94 percent of the power in Apple’s offices in the world is now supplied by renewable energy sources, up from 35 percent in 2010, according to the company.

Apple is building a new 2.8-million-square-foot headquarters in Cupertino that will be powered solely by renewable energy when it’s completed in 2016.

About 120 of Apple’s U.S. stores, or nearly half of the outlets in the country, run entirely on renewable energy. The stores running on renewable energy include locations in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Santa Monica, Calif.

The company isn’t specifying a timetable for meeting its goal to convert its other 300 stores in the world to renewable energy.

Fiat-Chrysler to produce iconic Jeep

Automaker Fiat-Chrysler said on Saturday that it would begin producing the iconic American brand Jeep in China from 2015 to meet demand in the world’s largest car market.

Fiat-Chrysler — created by Italy’s Fiat acquiring Chrysler of the United States — will produce three Jeep sport utility vehicle (SUV) models in China, including one specifically designed for the Chinese market, the company said in a statement.

The announcement came ahead of the Beijing auto show, which opens to the public on Monday, as global automakers flock to China to show off their latest models.

Jeeps are currently available to Chinese consumers as imports, the statement said, adding nearly 60,000 Jeeps were sold in China last year, making the country the largest market for the brand outside of the United States.

Fiat-Chrysler will produce Jeep vehicles through its existing joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. (GAC) but at a new manufacturing branch in the southern city of Guangzhou, it said.

Plans to produce Jeeps in China set off a political storm during the 2012 US presidential election campaign, after Republican candidate Mitt Romney ran an attack ad implying that it would export American jobs.
But Fiat has previously said plans to build Jeep vehicles in China were an expansion, not a transfer, of operations.

Fiat-Chrysler and GAC already produce other vehicles, including the Viaggio sedan, at a factory in the central city of Changsha. GAC was China’s sixth largest domestic automaker by sales in 2013, according to an industry group.

China has become critical to foreign automakers as the world’s biggest auto market, but Fiat was conspicuous by its absence with local production until it began selling domestically-produced cars in 2012.

Last year, China’s auto sales surged 13.9 percent to 21.98 million vehicles, according to a Chinese industry group, as a recovery in Japanese brands previously hurt by a diplomatic row offset the impact of slowing economic growth.

This plane has no windows! But it is really fast

(CNN) -- Concorde is a thing of the past, but a number of companies are racing to release the first supersonic business jet.

Aerion Corporation is working on a jet that would reach Mach 1.6 and would possibly be ready for release by 2020, while Spike Aerospace has announced plans for the S-512, a business jet that could travel at speeds of Mach 1.8 and would be available by 2018. So why has it taken nearly 50 years to revisit the concept?

According to Vik Kachoria, president and CEO of Spike Aerospace, one of the main issues that plagued the Concorde was the sonic boom -- the disruptive noise that results from the shockwaves created when an object travels faster than the speed of sound. "At its worst, the sonic boom would sound like a loud thunder clap over your head. It would rattle windows and loosen roof tiles. It was pretty jarring. If you lived under the Concorde's flight path, you might hear it several times a day," he says.

The effect was so disturbing that most countries either banned supersonic flights, or restricted them from traveling over land. Understandably, this is an issue that the aerospace industry has needed to address in order to make supersonic flight viable.

A plane without windows?
Kachoria notes that currently, it makes more sense to develop supersonic business jets than larger commercial aircraft, because the plane's diminutive size results in a smaller boom.
While he's remained tight-lipped about many aspects of the design (some are still awaiting patent), he recently announced that the S-512 will be built without windows (except for the one the pilots see out of), a feature that will reduce drag and overall cost of the unit.

"Even at subsonic speeds, windows add a tremendous cost to the aircraft because the fuselage has to be designed to support those windows. If you eliminate all that, you create piece with less structural issues, less manufacturing costs, and less parts count," he says.

It sounds like a claustrophobe's nightmare, though Kachoria has attempted to compensate for the windowless design by installing flatscreens, which can either display the view outside, or can be used to show a movie or PowerPoint presentation -- should a conference need to take place in the air.


"It's not a new concept, but in the past we didn't have the technology -- the flatscreens, or digital cameras to capture the resolution, or the ability to stitch together cameras to create a seamless panoramic view," he says.
Overall, the saving in manufacturing means each unit will cost between $60 million to $80 million.




It's all in the wing
According to Aerion, the main detriment to producing a supersonic aircraft in the near future isn't the boom (an issue even Kachoria admits is still another 15 years or so from being fully resolved), but the cost.
"The reasons speeds haven't changed much since the 1960s has more to do with economics than technology. You just can't have supersonic travel at the rock-bottom fares most passengers prefer" says Jeff Miller, the director of communications for Aerion.

"Those constraints don't apply to business jets, so it's most likely supersonic technology will be applied there first. Even so, economy of operation is important, mainly in terms of fuel efficiency. If you can't find a way to reduce fuel consumption, you won't have a supersonic jet that will get you very far," he adds.
When the Concorde slowed down to below Mach 1, it burned though more fuel. Aerion has been researching ways to compensate this with the development of the supersonic natural laminar flow (SNLF) wing, which it has been testing in conjunction with NASA.

The wing, which is thinner and shorter than typical plane wings, has been proven to reduce friction drag by 80%, and overall airframe drag by 20%.

"The more drag, the more power required to push a wing through the air," explains Miller.

A resolution?
While work is being done on the sonic boom issue, neither Aerion nor Spike expect to release a jet before it's resolved completely. The early models will likely only be able to reach high speeds when traveling over seas.

"We don't have the sonic boom issue resolved yet," admits Kachoria, "you wouldn't be able to fly above Mach 1 between New York and Los Angeles, for instance. But between Tokyo and LA? You'd see a big time savings."
